But before all that I thought I would share the little story behind how this little design came about. I have a whole box full of patterns and ideas that I could have kicked off Fat Red Bird Designs with but this little design epitomises every element of what you can expect here - practical, functional, fun, simple.
Both my girls suffered from terrible eczema. They were also very dribbly when teething. The excess moisture on their chest from all that dribble irritated their eczema terribly. It would get itchy and incredibly sore (even infected sometimes) it made them both pretty miserable.
I had piles of bibs and found them useless, they were pulled off, tended to dangle in the way whilst crawling and some were so fiddly to get on and off which is so impractical when you are having to change a saturated bib multiple times during the day.
The other thing that inspired me to design this bib was that my babies were growing up, they were toddlers - but still very dribbly. I didn't want them to necessarily look like they were wearing a bib.
So the design was born.
They became a staple item in our house and we had quite a collection. We had grubby ones for the real grotty at home days (generally made of upcycled clothing), but then with all those glorious fabric options readily available these days we had bright, fun, cute and pretty ones.
The 'good stash' were treated like tops and were perfect for those "oh my gosh we are late for school drop off & the toddler is still wearing the same onesie they had on yesterday" scenario. Throw it over the top and I avoided strange looks from fellow parents, some even commented on how cute my little kiddy looked, especially when I had time to team it with shorts or leggings. Win, win.
That is the story of the bib and since then I have made so many as they are so much fun to make.
You will absolutely love making these, and for those that would like to make a bit of dosh selling them - unlike most patterns that are only available to download for personal use - I will have a range of Limited Production Licenses for you to purchase too.
